School of Sanctuary

Ss. Mary and John Primary School is proud to be a re-accredited School of Sanctuary. This award recognises our continued commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all children and families, especially those seeking sanctuary.

Being a School of Sanctuary means that we actively promote kindness, compassion and understanding throughout our school community. We believe that everyone belongs, regardless of background, language or experience, and we work hard to ensure that our pupils feel valued, listened to and supported.

School of Sanctuary Award

As a school with a diverse community, we place great importance on helping children understand the experiences of refugees and people seeking asylum. Through assemblies, collective worship, lessons, discussions and enrichment activities such as our PenPal communications, pupils are encouraged to develop empathy, respect and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Our re-accreditation reflects the ongoing work we do to embed these values across the curriculum and school life. The impact can be seen in our pupils’ attitudes towards one another, their confidence in discussing global issues, and their understanding of what it means to be welcoming and inclusive citizens.
