Ofsted Inspection
Our school was last inspected by Ofsted in March 2023. This inspection graded our school as good.
Here are some comments from the Inspection Report:
- There is a warm, calm and welcoming atmosphere at St Mary and St John School.
- Leaders ensure there is a positive culture of safeguarding across the school.
- Teachers prioritise pupils’ personal and academic development. They have high expectations of pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
- Leaders focus on ensuring that all pupils learn to become fluent and enthusiastic readers.
- Leaders have put a broad, ambitious and well-considered curriculum in place. It is designed to support all pupils to achieve well.
- All pupils know what it means to ‘Be ready, be respectful, be kind’. Pupils follow these simple school rules and know why they are important.
- Pupils are eager to learn and the atmosphere around the school is pleasant and orderly.
- Pupils talk confidently about fundamental British values, such as respect and democracy. They understand that people are different and why respect and tolerance are important. This supports pupils to be well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI)
Our last Catholic School Inspection was in July 2024 and we were graded as a good Catholic school in all areas.
Here are some of the key findings:
- The school is a place of welcome where everyone knows they are safe, known for themselves, and nurtured.
- There is a strong sense of family and embedded cultures of welcome and inclusivity at SS Mary & John.
- Staff know the community they serve and respond with generosity and authenticity to pupils’ needs.
- Leaders and governors keep Christ at the heart of their school, witness to gospel values and live a preferential option for the poor.
- Using the ‘reflection of the day’ in religious education lessons enables pupils to build on their prior learning sequentially.
- A daily prayer rhythm is embedded and central to the school’s life.
- The school benefits from a range of well-cared-for prayer spaces which enable pupils to worship and reflect
