Pupil Premium

Introduction

What is Pupil Premium? – A Guide for Parents

The Pupil Premium is extra funding given to schools in England to help improve the education of children from families who may face financial challenges. The aim is to make sure every child has the same opportunities to succeed, no matter their background.

Who is it for?

The funding is provided for children who:

  • Are eligible for free school meals, or have been in the past 6 years.
  • Are looked after by the local authority (e.g. in care).
  • Have been adopted from care.
  • Have a parent serving in the armed forces.

How is the money used?

Schools decide how to spend the Pupil Premium in ways that best support eligible pupils. Here are some examples of how it might be used:

1. Resources

  • Providing laptops or tablets to help with learning.
  • Buying learning materials like books, stationery, or revision guides.
  • Supporting access to learning tools such as educational software or apps.

2. Staffing

  • Employing teaching assistants to provide extra support in the classroom.
  • Running small group sessions or one-to-one tutoring in subjects like maths and reading.
  • Employing mentors or pastoral staff to support emotional wellbeing and behaviour.

3. Opportunities

  • Providing opportunities for children that give them life experiences.
  • Providing after-school clubs, sports, or music lessons to widen children’s experiences.
  • Supporting attendance at school.

Why it matters

The goal of the Pupil Premium is to close the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. By providing the right support, schools aim to boost learning, confidence, and long-term success.

If you think your child might be eligible, or you’re unsure, please contact the school office as they can guide you on how to apply and how the support could benefit your child.
