SACRAMENTS

At SS. Mary and John's,  our Catholic children receive three Sacraments:

  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation - Year 3
  • The Sacrament of the Eucharist (First Holy Communion) - Year 3
  • The Sacrament of Confirmation - Year 6

Our school prides itself on strong links between the parish, school and home. This means that the preparation for these sacraments is very strong.

Parents are invited to be fully involved in the preparation of their child for the Sacraments.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

Baptised Catholic children in Year 3 take another step along their Faith Journey, by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

All children in Year 3 are included in the celebration of the sacrament and our inclusive ethos ensures that those children who are not baptised Catholics are enabled to participate as fully as possible in supporting their classmates during the programme. This sacrament is a chance for the children to say sorry to God for the things they have done that have hurt God, others and themselves.   This sacrament always takes place during the season of Lent.

SACRAMENT OF THE EUCHARIST

Children in Year 3 receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist once they have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The children prepare thoroughly for this Sacrament. This preparation takes place during RE lessons and there are also opportunities to work with the parish priest and parents to ensure the children are fully prepared.  The children receive Holy Communion after Easter. This sacrament is widely celebrated by the entire school and parish community.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Children in Year 6 receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Here they learn to grow in faith whilst considering the role of the Disciple. Their preparation, once again, includes a  day retreat to Alton Castle. This enables them to gain a deeper understanding of their faith.  A Bishop from the Archdiocese of Birmingham confirms the children, during a moving service in which they confirm that they are ready for the next step in their journey of faith.
