Reception
Welcome to Reception, the first steps of your child’s learning journey at the Ss. Mary and John’s Catholic Primary School.
Every child deserves the best possible start in their education and through parental and teacher support they can fulfill their potential. Reception will lay the foundations to enable your child to become an independent and self-motivated learner.
The teachers are Miss McGrath and Miss David and they are supported by teaching assistants Miss Aspley and Miss Bebbington.
In Reception there are seven areas of learning:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Many of the activities which the children undertake are initiated by them – often making use of areas like our home corner and writing area – while they are also regularly involved in whole class, group and individual tasks.
Each week the children will be participating in PE lessons. It is important that children come to school in their PE kit. PE kit consists of their school jumper, a red t-shirt, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and pumps/trainers.
- John R have PE on Monday and Wednesday.
- Mary R have PE on Monday and Thursday.

Our Saints
Saint Joseph
John R’s class saint is Saint Joseph – the husband of the Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus.
Joseph was chosen by God as a trustworthy guardian and protector of Mary and Jesus. Joseph was a carpenter and he spent his life working very hard, as he wanted to provide for his family. The feast of Saint Joseph is celebrated on the 19th March every year.

Saint Joseph
Saint Anne
Mary R’s class saint is Saint Anne – the Mother of Our Lady and Grandmother of Jesus.
As the grandparents of Jesus, Anne and her husband Joachim are considered the patron saints of grandparents. Their feast day is celebrated on 26 July.
