Year 1
Miss Needle, Miss Harvey, Mrs Jones and Miss Vowles welcome you to Year 1.
Year 1 is a busy but exciting year as children continue their learning journey at St Mary and John’s and build upon the foundations built in Reception.
In Year 1 the children begin a more structured timetable for the Year 1 curriculum. Here you will find information on our curriculum as well as other updates on news and events of importance. In Year 1, we begin to embed and understand our three school values (be ready, be respectful and be kind), as well as the virtues which we focus on each half term. Through year group discussions and assemblies, our children will learn to apply these virtues to their everyday lives.
PE Days
Our PE days are on a Monday and Wednesday.
During the Year
Phonics Screening Check
The phonics screening check is a reading test which takes place in the Summer term of Year 1. It involves the children reading 40 random real and ‘alien’ words. Here you will find key information, updates and ways that you can support your child:
- Help your child to use ‘Special friends, Fred talk’ to read words.
- Practise reading sounds speedily.
- Listen to your child read their story book every day.
Our Learning

Our Saints
Saint Bernadette
In John 1, our class saint is St. Bernadette, the patron saint of illness.
When she was 14 years old, she saw a beautiful lady in a cave. The lady was Mary, the mother of Jesus! Mary smiled at Bernadette and asked her to pray and be kind. Bernadette tried to be good and kind every day.

Saint Bernadette
Saint Francis of Assisi
In Mary 1, our class saint is St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and nature.
He loved God very much and wanted to live a simple life, helping others and taking care of animals. He told everyone that animals are our friends and we should take care of them.
