Year 4
Hello and welcome to our wonderful Year 4 class at Ss. Mary and John!
We are so excited to share our learning journey with you. In our class, we work hard, show kindness, and live out our school’s Catholic values every day – love, respect, honesty, and care for one another.
Our classroom is a place where everyone is welcome, and we all help each other to grow in faith and knowledge. We pray together, learn together, and support each other like one big family.
We are lucky to have a fantastic team of teachers who are here to help us shine:
- Miss Homer – always ready with a smile and lots of creative ideas
- Miss Yearwood – kind, caring, and full of encouragement
- Mrs Grainger – supportive and great at helping us do our best
- Mrs Harris-Benjamin – full of joy and always happy to help us learn
We can’t wait to show you all the amazing things we do in Year 4!

Our Saints
Saint Anthony
Mary 4’s class saint is Saint Anthony, who was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal.
He was born into a wealthy family and by the age of fifteen asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. During his time in the Abbey, he learned theology and Latin. Fernando eventually received permission to leave the Abbey so he could join the new Franciscan Order. When he was admitted, he changed his name to Anthony.
Anthony then travelled to Morocco to spread God’s truth, but became extremely sick and was returned to Portugal to recover. The return voyage was blown off-course and the party arrived in Sicily, from which they travelled to Tuscany. Anthony was assigned to the hermitage of San Paolo after local friars considered his health. As he recovered, Anthony spent his time praying and studying.
Anthony had a book of psalms that contained notes and comments to help when teaching students and, in a time when a printing press was not yet invented, he greatly valued it. A novice stole Anthony’s valuable book. When Anthony discovered it was missing, he prayed it would be found or returned to him. The thief did return the book and this links to why we always pray to St Anthony when things are lost and they often are found.

Saint Anthony
Saint Lucy
John 4’s class saint is St Lucy, the patron saint of eye ailments. This is partly due to her name, Lucy, meaning ‘light’. It is believed that she had her eyes removed.
On her feast day, 13th December, the eldest daughter in each home would have a crown of candles to light up the darkness in their lives. There are many legends linked to the life of Lucy and many of them highlight the persecution of people who were Christians. Lucy chose a life with Christ and was persecuted for this.
